World Mobile

World Mobile is a decentralized wireless network built on blockchain, aiming to provide affordable connectivity to underserved regions. Its core business involves deploying solar-powered AirNodes as wireless access points, operated by local individuals or communities, while EarthNodes handle network validation and governance. The project operates a shared economy model where node operators earn WMT tokens for their contributions.

The main market pain point World Mobile addresses is the high infrastructure cost and lack of incentive for traditional telecom operators to serve remote or low-density areas. By leveraging DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks), it lowers entry barriers and enables community-driven coverage expansion. The network has been commercially deployed in Tanzania since 2022 and has expanded to over 500,000 users by 2026, with field tests in Kenya, Mozambique, and Nigeria using idle TV spectrum and Starlink.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), World Mobile launched Atmosphere Grid, a new layer extending EarthNodes into sovereign AI infrastructure. This includes four core services: EarthVault for post-quantum encrypted storage, EarthMesh for private inter-agent networking, EarthCompute for secure isolated computing, and EarthInfer for distributed edge AI inference. The system uses a usage-based settlement mechanism where AI agents pay for compute, inference, storage, and networking via WMTx microtransactions. Atmosphere Grid is currently on testnet, with mainnet rollout planned in phases starting 2026.

Regarding negative developments, the project's transition from Cardano to Base in late 2025 raised concerns among early community members about ecosystem shifts. Additionally, the 2023 Vodacom partnership in Mozambique was a limited trial rather than a full commercial deployment, and actual user numbers remain modest compared to initial projections.
